For The King (tabletop games)

For The King

This week we talked about several different types of Tabletop games. An interesting video game was made called For The King which is essentially capturing a tabletop game experience, however in a videogame form.

The player starts off by creating their character, they can change their appearance and class. The options for appearance are fairly limited, but its enough to give the player a couple of options. The classes however are fairly expansive, the player starts off with 4 classes to choose from but can unlock up to 13 classes. The goal of the game is up to three adventures go out in the world, clear temples, buy items and weapons and eventually defeat a world ending boss. For example in one of the "boards" the final boss is this lovely creature.

The players will have to prepare and work together to better themselves to face him though and.... He hits and Tanks like a world ending boss, so defeating him is no easy task... hell even a random encounter can randomly outright kill off a player. Some events can be good such as finding a weapon stuck in a stone or you may like me fall in a pit and just die... just right then and there and have your friend laugh at you. These events however are tied to a "roll of the dice" that is also affected by your stats so most of the time you won't just die.

When not in battle, most of the game is taking place in an overworld, tabletop like experience where players take turns rolling dice and moving a set number of spaces. There are random encounters, and battles to run into. The majority of video games from my experience are single player experiences, or competitive player vs players games. Are cooperative games like this potentially fun and an area of the market that videogames are missing out on? Should there be board games that are designed for video game consoles? I would say yes as personally I really enjoyed this game and as we talked about games where you aren't competing are definitely more inclusive and its fun to just spend time with people without making them well rage.

  1. Hi Steven,
This game has a very interesting concept it took a board game and made it into a computer game which is something I’ve never heard of. You started off by mentioning that you start off creating a character which is a topic we discussed last week with representation in gaming and giving options on appearance. It also comes across as an adventure game with it being more planned and based on a building communities within the game which builds on the rhetoric concepts.

  2. Hey Steven,
Are you into tabletop games? How do you feel about it being a tabletop game turned video game? This game remind me of a game that I watched on a show called "Riverdale." The show is based on a comic that follows a bunch of high school students and the mischief they get in. One of there endeavors is a tabletop game called Griffins and Gargoyles where they have to ultimately fight the Gargoyle King. However, first they have to figure out who he is but much like this game, running into him could kill you.
